Important information
Your hire car tour through Cuba

Schedule time
Time seems to have stood still in Cuba - be patient when picking up your hire car.
If you are planning a longer trip, it is better to pick up your hire car Havana the evening before. Plan enough time for your Cuba round trip hire car and start early to avoid running out of time later.

Roads
Some roads in Cuba are in poor condition. Drive carefully and slower than the speed limit to avoid potholes.
Our local partners will give you tips on how to avoid particularly bad stretches of road on your hire car tour of Cuba.
Plan more time and use GPS or maps, as signposting in Cuba can be sparse. Be particularly careful at railway crossings without barriers.

Speed limit
Please adhere to the speed limits, even if they are not always clear.
Speed cameras are not uncommon in Cuba and checking tourists is often used as an additional source of income.
- In urban areas: up to 50 km/h
- Country roads: up to 80 km/h
- on motorways: up to 100 km/h

Signage
Signposting in Cuba can be sparse, especially in rural areas, which can make orientation difficult.
Therefore, a GPS or an up-to-date map is very useful to help you find your way and reach your destination easily. It is advisable to familiarise yourself with the route in advance.

Driving in the dark
Driving in the dark should be avoided if possible.
Firstly, many roads are poorly lit and secondly, you may encounter a variety of animals at night.
In addition, you will not be able to see the large potholes on the road as clearly as in the dark.

Parking
The parking situation in the cities, especially in Havana, can be somewhat difficult, but outside the larger cities this is not a problem.
Most hotels offer car parking. If you are staying in private accommodation, enquire about parking facilities in advance. Always choose a paid car park that is guarded by a parking attendant. You then pay the car park attendant in cash for his work.

Refuelling
The petrol station network in Cuba is not as dense as in Europe.
We therefore recommend that you refuel regularly to avoid unpleasant surprises during your car hire trip. Do not fill up on reserve, as petrol stations outside the cities can sometimes be closed.
Pay attention to the traffic lights at petrol stations and pay before filling up. As a tourist, you should choose "gasolina especial" - this special petrol is usually the most reliably available. The Cuban government has set up special petrol stations for rental cars, where tourists can preferably fill up with USD cards. You can find the locations of these petrol stations with international card payment in USD on our interactive map.

Navigation system
A navigation system is an essential part of your equipment, as the signposting often leaves a lot to be desired. However, navigation devices are not welcome in Cuba and are therefore not available in vehicles.
We recommend that you download offline road maps in advance in case your internet connection fails in remote regions, or even better, before travelling.
