When people think of Panama, the first thing that often comes to mind is the famous Panama Canal or the popular children's book by Janosch "Oh, how beautiful Panama is". In fact, the small country in the heart of the American continent experienced a boost in popularity thanks to the publication of this book, although the little tiger and the little bear do not actually reach Panama in the course of the story. But one thing is certain: Panama is indeed beautiful and surprisingly diverse. In Panama City, you will find probably the most modern and cosmopolitan city in Central America and, of course, the Panama Canal. Outside the big city, unique nature and national parks and fantastic beaches await your visit.

Panama is located in the south of Central America. The country borders Costa Rica to the west and Colombia to the east. With a total area of 75,517 km², Panama occupies the narrowest part of the Central American land bridge. Its coastline is 1,915 km long. The country is crossed by the Panama Canal, which connects the Caribbean Sea in the north and the Pacific Ocean in the south. The country is crossed by the Central American Cordillera, which includes the volcanic cone of Volcán Barú in the west, the highest mountain in the country (3,477 m), and is ideal for active travellers.

Panama has a total of 15 national parks. The Darién National Park is the best known and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With more than 10,000 plant species and around 1,000 bird species, it is home to a unique variety of flora and fauna.

In general, Panama is home to a large number of animals. The mammals include armadillos, the Geoffrey and brown-headed spider monkeys, the Panama monkey, the Panama capybara and the ocelot (a nocturnal cat of prey that grows up to 160 cm tall). Other cats of prey are the puma, the weasel cat, the long-tailed cat and the Panama jaguar, the Central American and South American otter and the diurnal tayra. Panama is also home to alligators, crocodiles, iguanas and snakes. The pointed crocodile, which is one of the largest crocodile species in the world, can grow up to seven metres long. Rare birds such as the harpy eagle, the fish hawk, the magnificent eagle, the crested caracara, the yellow-headed caracara and the turkey vulture can, with a bit of luck, be observed.

Panama, officially known as the Republic of Panama, has around 4.2 million inhabitants, 1.5 million of whom live in the capital Panama City. In general, most people live in cities, but are mainly distributed along the Pacific coast. The population in Panama is divided into 70 % mestizos (mixed race between the indigenous Indian population and European immigrants), 13 % people of colour and 10 % whites or Creoles. The Indian population only makes up 12% of the total population. Around 1 % belong to other groups. The official language is Spanish, although some indigenous languages still exist.

The most important elements of Panamanian culture are music and dance, which can be experienced on round trips and group tours. In addition to the well-known Latin American sounds, the latter is influenced by Colombian and Caribbean elements. This results in a great diversity. The majority of Panama's population (86%) is Roman Catholic. Protestants, on the other hand, form a minority of only 10%; only 1% of the population is Jewish and 1% Muslim.

As in other Central American countries, Panamanian cuisine is characterised by a wide variety of influences. It is based on the cuisine of the indigenous peoples who lived in Panama before colonisation. Later, Europeans and African slaves, and from the end of the 19th century Afro-Caribbeans, Chinese and Americans also brought other influences into the country.

The following dishes are typical of Panama: ceviche (fish in lime juice, onions and peppers), patacones de plátano (fried plantains), sancocho (Panamanian stew with chicken, meat and vegetables), tamales (spiced pastry wrapped in banana leaves), carimañolas and empanadas (pancakes filled with meat, chicken or cheese). Coconut milk and guandu (a type of bean) are widely used. In coastal areas, a lot of seafood is eaten, which is offered here in great variety. Chicas (fresh fruit juices), which are drunk diluted with a little water, are also very popular.

Panama has a tropical climate all year round, which you should bear in mind before travelling. It is very warm in the coastal areas (around 32 °C) and only cools down to around 21 °C at night. The different altitudes result in a variety of climates. In the mountains, temperatures only rise to between 10 and 18 °C. On the Caribbean coast, there is a dry season from January to April and the so-called "little dry season" from July to September. December and January are the best months to spend time on the Pacific coast. There is little rain during this period and the weather is very pleasant. December and January are also the only months in which the Darién Gap can be crossed.

German citizens do not require a visa for a stay of up to 180 days, but either a valid onward travel ticket (air or land, plus a valid residence permit for the respective country) or a return flight ticket to Germany must be presented upon entry. You should also be able to present proof of sufficient funds for your stay (either 500 US dollars in cash or a bank statement showing the corresponding amount on a credit card account).

Important information:
Since 2008, foreigners have been required to have an identity document. You should therefore always have your passport with you, or a copy of your passport showing the entry stamp.

Further information can be found on the website of the Federal Foreign Office.

The public currency in Panama is the balboa, which only exists in the form of coins and is linked to the US dollar at a ratio of 1:1. In Panama City and other larger cities you can usually pay with international credit cards (Eurocard/Mastercard, especially VISA). There are also numerous ATMs where you can withdraw cash with your EC/Maestrocard. It is not always possible to exchange euros, but you can pay really well with US dollars.
