History of the place and interesting facts
Veracruz was founded in 1519 by Hernán Cortés and is one of the oldest cities in Mexico. The city played a decisive role during the Spanish conquest and became an important harbour for trade and the connection between Mexico and Europe. Over the centuries, Veracruz has been a strategic location for military and economic activities. The city experienced numerous attacks, including pirate raids and military conflicts during the Mexican Wars of Independence and the Revolution. This turbulent history is reflected in the numerous fortresses, historic buildings and monuments that characterise the city.
Culture of Veracruz
The culture of Veracruz is rich and diverse, characterised by the influences of indigenous peoples, the Spanish colonial period and Afro-Mexican traditions. The city is famous for its lively music scene, especially the son jarocho, a traditional music style that is often combined with the Jarabe del Jalisco, a folkloric dance. The gastronomy of Veracruz is also remarkable, with a variety of dishes that utilise fresh seafood, tropical fruits and spices. Cultural highlights also include colourful festivals and carnivals that celebrate the region's heritage and traditions, such as the famous Virgen de la Candelaria festival.
Our tips on site
Baracoa enjoys a tropical climate with high temperatures all year round. However, the best time to visit is from November to April, when the weather is cooler and drier. These months offer ideal conditions for exploring and outdoor activities.
Try the local speciality cucurucho, a sweet treat made from coconut, sugar and fruit wrapped in palm leaves. Don't miss the fresh seafood on offer in the local paladares (private restaurants).
As Baracoa is very remote, we recommend hiring a scooter or hire car to explore the city and its surroundings at your own pace. This gives you flexibility and allows you to discover the sights of the region independently.
