Alajuela, nestled in the fertile plains of Costa Rica's Central Valley, is a charming town with colonial flair and tropical joie de vivre. As the birthplace of national hero Juan Santamaría and an important historical centre, Alajuela offers a fascinating mix of history, culture and nature experiences. The country's second largest city is an ideal starting point for excursions to the Poás volcano, coffee plantations and the surrounding mountains. With its pleasant climate, lively markets and authentic cuisine, Alajuela attracts all those who want to discover Costa Rica off the beaten track.
✓ Alajuela Cathedral - neoclassical church with tranquil city park
✓ Insight into the history of the national hero at the Juan Santamaría Museum
✓ Macaws, toucans and native wild animals in a natural environment at Ave Zoo
✓ Grecia and the metal church - fascinating church made of Belgian steel

The cathedral of Alajuela, also known as the Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, is an architectural gem from the 19th century. Its classicist style with white columns, round arches and a central dome lends it a special elegance that blends harmoniously into the cityscape. Directly in front of it, the well-tended central park with shady trees and benches invites you to linger - a popular meeting place for locals and travellers alike. The peaceful atmosphere and the view of the church provide an ideal introduction to the authentic city life of Alajuela.
The Juan Santamaría Museum tells the eventful story of the Costa Rican national hero, who fell in 1856 in battle against the troops of US mercenary William Walker. Housed in the former military hospital, the museum offers a vivid exhibition with historical documents, uniforms, paintings and interactive media. Visitors are given a deep insight into the emergence of Costa Rican national consciousness and the role of Santamaría in the country's history. The inner courtyard with its colonnades is particularly worth seeing - a place of reflection and historical significance.
Zoo Ave, just a few kilometres outside Alajuela, is a flagship project for species conservation and rehabilitation in Costa Rica. Unlike traditional zoos, this facility focuses on rescuing injured wild animals and returning them to the wild. Visitors stroll through spacious, tropical grounds and encounter macaws, toucans, caimans, monkeys and many other animal species. The lovingly designed environment conveys an intense experience of nature and makes the visit an educational and moving excursion, especially for animal and nature lovers.
The small town of Grecia surprises visitors with a unique piece of architecture: the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, built entirely from red steel. Imported from Belgium in the 19th century, the church was shipped across the Atlantic in individual parts and assembled on site - a masterpiece of engineering at the time. With its neo-Gothic style, colourful windows and unusual choice of materials, it is one of the most impressive church buildings in Latin America. Embedded in the well-kept city centre of Grecia, it is not only a religious but also a cultural landmark.
Sarchí is the best-known handicraft centre in Costa Rica and is famous for its colourful, hand-painted oxcarts - traditional ox carts that were once used to transport coffee. Today, these richly decorated carts are considered a national cultural asset and a symbol of Costa Rican identity. In numerous workshops and galleries, visitors can experience first-hand how they are carved, painted and decorated with great skill and passion. In addition to oxcarts, Sarchí also offers high-quality wood carvings, furniture and souvenirs - a worthwhile stop for anyone who wants to feel the creative heart of Costa Rica.

Alajuela was founded in 1782 and quickly developed into an important economic centre in Costa Rica. The city is closely associated with the national hero Juan Santamaría, who died in 1856 fighting William Walker's invaders. His legacy is carried on today in museums, monuments and the name of the international airport. Alajuela has always played an important role in the country's political and cultural history.
Alajuela combines rural Costa Rican traditions with urban flair. The inhabitants - known for their warmth - celebrate numerous local festivals, such as the Juan Santamaría festival in April. Handicrafts, especially the famous painted ox carts from Sarchí, are deeply rooted in the region. Music, dance and cuisine are also central elements of the local identity.
The best time to visit Alajuela is during the dry season from December to April, when the weather is warm and sunny. Many cultural events take place in spring in particular, providing an authentic insight into local life.
Alajuela's cuisine is typical of the central highlands: simple, hearty and strongly characterised by fresh ingredients. Dishes such as olla de carne (beef stew) or arroz con pollo are very popular regionally and reflect the traditional Costa Rican way of life.
Alajuela is conveniently located - Juan Santamaría International Airport is just a few minutes from the city centre. Within the region, we recommend getting around in a hire car or with organised transfers to easily reach the rural highlights.
