Bahía Drake delights visitors with its unspoilt nature, species-rich rainforests and a naturalness that has become rare even in Costa Rica.

Natural paradise on the Pacific - Bahía Drake

Bahía Drake, located on the remote Pacific coast of the Osa Peninsula, is one of Costa Rica's last unspoilt natural paradises. Named after the English privateer Sir Francis Drake, who is said to have anchored here in the 16th century, the bay enchants visitors with its tropical rainforest, secluded beaches and spectacular biodiversity. The region is the gateway to the world-famous Corcovado National Park and an ideal starting point for whale watching, snorkelling and guided rainforest tours. Away from mass tourism, travellers can experience the pure beauty of nature here - authentic, peaceful and sustainable.

Corcovado National Park

Corcovado National Park is considered the wildest and most biodiverse protected area in Costa Rica - and, according to National Geographic, one of the most biologically intensive places on earth. With over 2.5 % of the world's biodiversity in just a small part of the country, the park offers spectacular opportunities for wildlife watching. Visitors can spot tapirs, coatis, monkeys, sloth bears and, with a bit of luck, even jaguars. The starting point for guided tours is often Bahía Drake, especially to the remote Sirena Ranger Station, which is located deep in the jungle and guarantees an authentic rainforest experience.

Isla del Caño

Isla del Caño is a protected marine reserve in the Pacific Ocean and one of Costa Rica's best snorkelling destinations. The crystal-clear waters around the island are home to colourful coral reefs, reef sharks, turtles and large schools of tropical fish. The visibility is excellent and provides unforgettable insights into the underwater world. The boat trip to the island is an experience in itself - often accompanied by dolphins or whales, depending on the season.

Río Sierpe

The extensive mangrove system of the Río Sierpe is one of the largest and ecologically most important in Central America. A boat tour through this mysterious water landscape takes you past dense roots, winding canals and a variety of animals - including crocodiles, monkeys, snakes, herons and darters. The silence, the play of light between the treetops and the slow glide make this trip an impressive nature experience. At the same time, you realise how important these ecosystems are for coastal protection and biodiversity.

Los Planes

The Los Planes suspension bridges offer a completely new view of the tropical rainforest - from high up in the treetops. On well-secured paths, visitors move through dense cloud forest, observing birds, insects and exotic plants from an unusual perspective. The area is quiet, uncrowded and ideal for anyone who wants to explore nature in an active yet relaxed way. The contrast between the lush vegetation and the vastness of the neighbouring Pacific Ocean is particularly impressive.

Bahía Drake village centre

The village centre of Bahía Drake is small, charming and full of local authenticity. Here, travellers mingle with locals on dusty paths, in small cafés, grocery shops or family-run lodges. The atmosphere is relaxed, the people welcoming - ideal for all those who want to experience Costa Rica away from the tourist hotspots. Numerous excursions start from here, but it is also worth simply pausing to watch the sunset or listen to a local musician.

History of the place and interesting facts

Bahía Drake was named after the British privateer Sir Francis Drake, who, according to legend, landed in the bay in 1579. For a long time, the region was only accessible by boat or aeroplane and thus remained largely untouched by tourism. In recent decades, the bay has developed into a hotspot for sustainable nature tourism thanks to its proximity to Corcovado National Park. Despite its growing popularity, Bahía Drake retains its original character and a deep connection to the surrounding nature.

Culture

The population in Bahía Drake traditionally lives from fishing, agriculture and increasingly from gentle ecotourism. Visitors here experience warm, down-to-earth hospitality and a strong connection to nature. Small communities are actively involved in preserving their environment, which is reflected in numerous local projects. Music, crafts and cuisine are characterised by the Pacific coastal culture - simple, honest and full of joie de vivre.
