Gruppenreisen Costa Rica »The Rio Celeste is known for its bright turquoise water, the impressive waterfall in Tenorio National Park and the mysterious natural phenomenon in which two clear rivers magically change colour.
The Rio Celeste, located in the Tenorio National Park in the north of Costa Rica, is one of the country's most impressive natural phenomena. Famous for its bright turquoise water, which is created by the unique combination of volcanic minerals, the river attracts nature lovers and those seeking peace and quiet in equal measure. The spectacular waterfall, the steaming thermal springs and the lush tropical vegetation make the Rio Celeste an unforgettable experience. Well-developed hiking trails lead through the dense rainforest to the magical point of "Los Teñideros", where two clear rivers seem to turn sky blue overnight. Away from the classic tourist trails, the Rio Celeste offers a harmonious interplay of colours, nature and tranquillity - ideal for travellers looking for authentic experiences in a protected natural paradise.
✓ The Rio Celeste waterfall, the region's most impressive natural highlight
✓ Los Teñideros - where two rivers magically turn turquoise in colour
✓ Sendero Misterioso, a well-developed hiking trail through lush nature
✓ El Borbollón - bubbling thermal spring in the heart of the rainforest
✓ Tenorio volcano, majestic in the background on every hike
With its intense turquoise-blue colour and powerful drop of around 30 metres, this waterfall is the undisputed highlight of the national park. Surrounded by dense rainforest, it offers a spectacular photo opportunity and an unforgettable nature experience.
This is where the colourless Río Buenavista meets the equally clear Río Quebrada Agria - and suddenly the famous blue of the Rio Celeste emerges. This natural phenomenon can be explained scientifically, but it seems like pure magic.
The national park's main hiking trail runs for around five kilometres through tropical vegetation, past watercourses, viewpoints and unique geological formations - ideal for connoisseurs and nature lovers.
Small bubbles rise from the riverbed here, evidence of underground volcanic activity. El Borbollón is a fascinating example of the geothermal energy that can be felt everywhere in this region.
The inactive Tenorio volcano rises calmly above the national park and dominates the landscape of the region. Even though it cannot be climbed directly, it is an impressive companion on any hike.
Explore the rainforest on well-maintained paths and discover the highlights of the Rio Celeste.
The hilly landscape around the national park is ideal for exploring on horseback.
Here you can observe sloths, toucans, howler monkeys and colourful frogs in their natural environment.
Nearby, natural thermal springs invite you to relax in the middle of nature.
In small villages you can gain an authentic insight into the life of the Tico people.
In small typical restaurants ("sodas") you can sample Costa Rican cuisine, e.g. gallo pinto and fresh fruit.

The region around the Rio Celeste is one of the most pristine parts of Costa Rica and for a long time was only populated by indigenous peoples such as the Maleku. With the establishment of the Tenorio Volcano National Park in 1995, the area was placed under protection and has since become an important centre for ecotourism. The discovery of the turquoise-coloured river has brought international attention to the remote area without losing its originality.
The culture of the region is strongly characterised by the rural traditions of Costa Rica - characterised by hospitality, closeness to nature and simple, authentic ways of life. In neighbouring villages such as Bijagua, people cultivate traditional crafts, celebrate local festivals and are happy to open the doors of their family businesses to visitors. The influence of indigenous cultures can still be seen today in craftsmanship, symbolism and spiritual references to nature.
The best time to visit the Rio Celeste is in the dry season from December to April, when the paths are easy to walk on and the water appears particularly clear. The transition months of May and November also offer pleasant temperatures with fewer visitors.
The regional cuisine is down-to-earth, fresh and characterised by rice, beans, fresh vegetables and tropical fruits. Local specialities such as "casado" or "gallo pinto" can be enjoyed authentically in small, family-run "sodas".
The journey is usually via the towns of Bijagua or Guatuso, from where the national park is easily accessible by off-road vehicle or transfer. Within the park, you can only get around on foot on signposted hiking trails.
