History of the place and interesting facts
Founded in 1513 (or 1515) by Vasco Porcallo de Figueroa, Remedios is one of the oldest cities in Cuba. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it benefited from sugar cane cultivation and trade, which led to an economic boom and magnificent architecture. In the 19th century, the city played a role in the Cuban wars of independence. Remedios is also known for its legends of pirates and hidden treasures.

The culture of Remedios is strongly characterised by traditions and festivities. Particularly noteworthy are the Parrandas de Remedios, a lively festival in December in which rival groups compete for the best decorations, music and fireworks.
The city is also a centre for Cuban music, famous for the composer Alejandro García Caturla, whose birthplace is now a museum. In addition, Remedio's colonial history is reflected in its architecture, such as the impressive Iglesia Mayor, making the city a cultural jewel of Cuba.
