History of the place and interesting facts
Cahuita was founded in the 18th century by Afro-Caribbean immigrants who originally came from the island of Jamaica. The community developed along the coast as a small fishing village with close ties to nature. In the 1970s, the neighbouring national park was established to protect the valuable ecosystem of rainforest, mangroves and coral reef. To this day, the village retains its authentic, original atmosphere and attracts nature-conscious travellers in particular.
Culture
Cahuita's culture is strongly characterised by Afro-Caribbean traditions, which are reflected in its music, dance, language and lifestyle. Calypso and reggae sounds are part of everyday life here, as is the friendly, open manner of the locals. In addition to Spanish, many residents also speak Creole English ("patois"), which contributes to the cultural diversity. Festivals, markets and live music evenings invite visitors to immerse themselves in the local joie de vivre.
Our tips on site
The Cahuita region can be visited all year round as the Caribbean climate is pleasantly warm and constant. It is particularly dry and sunny in the months of February, March, September and October, which offers ideal conditions for hiking and snorkelling tours. Unlike the Pacific coast, Costa Rica has its own microclimate cycle with less pronounced rainy seasons.
The cuisine in Cahuita is a culinary reflection of Costa Rica's Caribbean identity. Typical dishes include rice and beans with coconut milk, grilled fish, plantains and spicy chicken. Fresh tropical fruit, homemade juices and coconut water round off the meals. Many small, family-run restaurants offer authentic, lovingly prepared dishes in a relaxed atmosphere.
Cahuita is a manageable town where everything can be easily reached on foot or by bike. The paths in the national park are easy to walk on and mostly flat, which also makes it attractive for less sporty travellers. Taxis, shuttle services or comfortable minibuses are available for longer distances or excursions to neighbouring towns.
