History of the place and interesting facts
Bayamo occupies a special place in Cuban history as the cradle of Cuban independence. Bayamo was founded in 1513 by the Spanish conquistador Diego Velázquez and quickly developed into an important economic and cultural center. The city gained historical significance in 1868 when Carlos Manuel de Céspedes declared Cuba's independence from Spain and freed its slaves, triggering the Ten Years' War. In a dramatic act of resistance, the inhabitants burned Bayamo to the ground to prevent it from being recaptured by Spanish forces. This spirit of resistance is still celebrated today.
