Playa Matapalo

Playa Matapalo is one of the most impressive beaches on the Osa Peninsula - wild, expansive and nestled between the rainforest and the Pacific Ocean. The dark volcanic sand and the roaring sea create a powerful atmosphere that radiates tranquillity and unspoilt nature. Monkeys swing through the trees, macaws circle above the beach - observing nature is part of everyday life here. Ideal for walks, meditation or simply marvelling, Playa Matapalo offers an authentic beach experience far away from the tourist infrastructure.

King Louis Waterfall

Hidden in the tropical rainforest lies the King Louis Waterfall, a favourite destination for hikers and those seeking peace and quiet. A short walk takes you to this natural jewel, where the cool water pours over mossy rocks into a clear pool. Surrounded by dense greenery, exotic sounds and absolute silence, this place is an ideal retreat. Many visitors use the natural pool for a refreshing dip - a real highlight in the midst of unspoilt nature.

Pacific viewpoints

Along the slopes around Cabo Matapalo, there are spectacular views over the coastline and the endless Pacific Ocean. Especially at sunset, the landscape is transformed into a play of colours of gold, orange and purple - a sight that will stay with you for a long time. Some lodges and hiking trails lead specifically to these viewpoints, some with platforms or seating areas to linger. With a bit of luck, you may even spot whales or dolphins travelling through the gulf from here.

Forest paths

The area around Matapalo is criss-crossed by well-maintained paths that lead through lush rainforest, past watercourses and hidden beaches. These paths offer excellent opportunities for wildlife spotting: howler monkeys, coatis, iguanas and colourful birds regularly cross the path. Many lodges offer guided tours, often in the early morning or at dusk, when the wildlife is particularly active. The hikes are easy to moderately difficult and can be easily integrated into the daily routine.

Golfo Dulce

The Golfo Dulce is one of the few tropical fjord bays in the world - a calm, protected inlet with exceptional biodiversity. Dolphins, turtles and even humpback whales can be observed here, often very close to the boat. The clear, warm water is perfect for kayaking, snorkelling or swimming, while the surrounding mangroves offer ideal conditions for birdwatching and nature observation. For many visitors, an excursion to the Golfo Dulce is one of the most impressive experiences of their entire trip to Costa Rica.

The history of the region is an impressive example of how nature conservation and quality of life can be harmonised.
